One of the best surviving lighthouses in the country is found in Virginia Beach. The Cape Henry Lighthouse first began service in the period shortly after the Revolutionary War, and faithfully served as a beacon for seafarers along the Virginia coast well through most of the 19th century. After a routine inspection revealed potentially dangerous cracks in the foundation and first story walls, a newer facility replaced the Old Cape Henry Lighthouse in 1881.
Still, the older facility continued to be a day marker for persons traveling by water. Located on the Fort Story military base, the lighthouse is open for tours, and now features a museum and souvenir shop on the bottom floor. Popular among the tourist attractions in Virginia Beach, children of all ages will enjoy the step into the past among the modern look of the military base.
Another example of colonial living can be found at the Ferry Plantation, establishing in 1642. Originally developed by Adam Thoroughgood as a means of connecting various plantations using the waterways of the day, the site once held the Third Princess Anne Courthouse, which was construction in 1735. Later, a manor house was constructed on the property, but was destroyed by fire. The present Ferry Plantation house, built in 1830, used a number of bricks salvaged from the earlier structures. As one of the main tourist attractions in Virginia Beach, the plantation house is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays, is free.
If your family is in the mood for tourist attractions in Virginia Beach that are refreshing, there is always the Ocean Breeze Waterpark. With sixteen water slides and nineteen acres of pools, playgrounds, and lots of chances to splash around, the Ocean Breeze is only a couple of miles south of the ocean front. Restaurants and plenty of spots to spread out a picnic make this water park an ideal setting for a fun day out with the family.

@Animandel - Whether you like Myrtle Beach or Virginia Beach better depends on what you are looking for in a vacation. I think there are more things to do in Myrtle Beach. It is bigger and has more variety than Virginia Beach. Virginia beach has some of the same kinds of attractions, but there are fewer of them.
Actually, one of the biggest attractions of Virginia Beach is that it is smaller and less congested than Myrtle. Myrtle Beach is busier during the warm months then during the winter, but the place is still busy practically every weekend of the year. At Virginia Beach you have a boardwalk and you can walk to most of the places you will want to see. This is not true for Myrtle.
I prefer the Virginia Beach oceanfront and the people there seem to be more mature and easy going in general.
My family and I have spent several vacations in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. There is so much for all of us to do there. There are live shows, amusement parts for the kids and putt-putt courses. There are also a long list of full size golf courses. And of course there are all the activities that go along with the beach itself.
We are thinking of changing locations simply so we can get a change of scenery and see another place. Does anyone know how Virginia Beach compares to Myrtle Beach?
This article mentions the Cape Henry Lighthouse. I agree that this site alone is reason enough to stop in Virginia Beach. However, when I want to see lighthouses and enjoy nature, I prefer to visit the NC beaches. They have many lighthouses and you can find more quiet and less visited areas.
On the other hand, there are so many significant historical places in the state of Virginia that you can spend part of your vacation time touring those places and then spend a couple days relaxing on the beach without ever leaving the state.
