Scalp itch can be caused by a few different problems, so choosing the best shampoo to treat it should start with the cause. Knowing this will give you a starting point when shopping. The condition of your scalp and hair should also be considered. Scalp care shampoos come in a variety of formulas, so read the labels carefully before making a purchase.

You or a medical professional can determine cause of an itchy scalp by examining your symptoms. The most serious causes are contact dermatitis and dandruff, also known as seborrheic dermatitis or seborrhea. A medical professional can make a diagnosis and also recommend treatment. Head lice, dry skin on the scalp, and poor hygiene can also lead to itchy or flaky scalp.

If dermatitis is found to be the cause, medicated shampoos may effectively treat the discomfort. Severe cases of dermatitis-related itchy scalp may require a prescription-strength shampoo that a healthcare professional can prescribe. Choosing this type of shampoo for an itchy scalp is recommended for only the worst scalp problems.

When head lice cause an itchy scalp, you can choose an over-the-counter treatment shampoo that will calm itching and eliminate the lice. A medical professional can suggest the best shampoo for discomfort caused by lice, or you can read labels to see which product best suits your needs. If you have sensitive skin or allergies, look for a treatment shampoo that is hypoallergenic and not too harsh. Keep in mind that head lice can travel to bed linens and home furnishings, so thorough cleaning and washing is recommended to completely eradicate them.

Since scalp itch is sometimes related to skin problems, it is a good idea to consider your hair and skin type when choosing an itchy scalp cure. Dry skin and scalp should be treated with a shampoo that can moisturize the skin and hair. Replacing your regular shampoo with a moisturizing shampoo for an itchy scalp may be all you need to relieve your symptoms. A scalp conditioner may also help alleviate itchy scalp caused by dry skin.

Poor hygiene can lead to an itchy scalp, and if this is the cause, the solution is simple: clean your hair and scalp regularly with shampoo to avoid itching caused by dirt or oils. If you have oily hair, this may mean washing daily to maintain proper scalp care. Normal or dry hair usually requires washing every other day to keep it clean.

Dr. Bronners Tea Tree Castile Soap. It can be used for everything. Everything.

I have an extremely oil and itchy scalp. The only shampoo that relieves my symptoms is stinging nettle shampoo. It's a little hard to find. The one I'm using is imported from Germany, but it's great. It gets rid of the oil and itch after just one use. Washing my hair every day is also important.

@MikeMason-- Tea tree oil can be great for dry and itchy scalp, especially if the cause is a scalp fungal infection. There are definitely tea tree shampoos available. I used to use one several years ago, You should check out the pharmacy and health food stores.

If you can't find tea tree shampoo, you can always add a few drops of tea tree oil to your regular shampoo. But make sure that the shampoo itself is not aggravating your scalp condition.

Also, do a skin test on your arm first to see if you have an allergy to tea tree oil. This goes for any essential oil really. My sister has a tea tree oil allergy and she can't use tea tree oil, shampoo or face wash.

I've heard that tea tree oil is a good itchy scalp treatment. Are there any shampoos with tea tree oil in them and has anyone tried this treatment? Did it work?
