How Much Coffee Do Americans Drink?

Coffee remains a favorite beverage in the United States, but it lost some popularity in the late 20th century and early 21st century. According to information compiled by the US Census Bureau, the annual consumption of coffee per person was 26.7 gallons (101 liters) in 1980. By 2009, that figure had dropped to 23.3 gallons (88.2 liters) per person.

More facts about Americans and coffee:

  • In 2000, the National Coffee Association released a report indicating that 54 percent of U.S. adults had at least a morning cup of coffee on any given day. An additional 25 percent indicated they drank coffee on an occasional basis. About 18 percent of coffee drinkers said they preferred to drink various blends of gourmet coffee products.

  • Men consume more coffee per day than women do. Men averaged 1.9 cups per day, and women average 1.4 cups per day.

  • Coffee is a good source of caffeine and can provide benefits when consumed in moderation. When consumed in excess, the caffeine in coffee can increase nervousness, inhibit motor coordination and lead to sleeping difficulties.
