Is a Home in Mexico More Likely to Have a Television or Refrigerator?

Homes in Mexico are more likely to have a television than a refrigerator. More than 90 percent of households in Mexico report having a TV, but only a little more than 80 percent report having a refrigerator. To put that in perspective, more than 25 percent of homes in the United States have at least two refrigerators.

More about Mexico:

  • There were huge changes in the quality of living in Mexican homes from 1990 to 2010. In 1990, about 20 percent of the houses in Mexico had a bare-earth floor, and one-third lacked sewage access. In 2010, only about 6 percent of homes have bare earth floors and only one in 10 have no sewage access.

  • Only about 65 percent of homes in Mexico have a shower.
  • More Mexican households have a mobile phone than have a land line.

The second bullet point mentions that only about sixty five percent of Mexican homes have a shower. However, that's still a fairly large number, though it could he higher. As for the lack of showering, perhaps there are several easy alternatives to this. After all, centuries ago, showers didn't exist either. However, people were able to make a living in spite of that.

I had a friend who used to live in Mexico, but moved to Chicago to find a better life. She told me that even though she enjoys her home and heritage, life was very rough for her there. Some of the things she mentioned are included in the above article, which includes sewage problems and dirt floors. Obviously, this isn't the case for everyone, but it's definitely something to take into perspective.

In relation to Mexicans, one thing I've noticed is that a lot of people stereotype them as being poor. After reading these tidbits, even though I still don't agree with that perspective, I can see where they're coming from. A lot of Mexicans might be poor due to immigration issues. In other words, they go to America to get a better life. However, with little money, when they get there, they have a hard time adjusting to society.
