Is the US Population Getting More Diverse?

The US population is getting more diverse, as the millennial generation born after 1980 has been found to be the most racially diverse generation in US history with approximately 43% being non-white. This is thought to mainly be due to the increase in Hispanic and Asian immigrants to the US since the mid-1960s who have adult children who were born in the country and are US citizens. Nearly 50% of all newborns in 2014 were non-white and the US Census projects racial diversity will to continue to grow: it is estimated that the US will be majority non-white by the year 2043.

More about the US population:

  • Less than one-fifth of the millennial generation believes people are trustworthy, according to a 2007 study from the Pew Research Center, which is thought to be possibly be due to growing racial diversity as minorities report lower levels of trust in others in the US.
  • Just 21% of the “silent generation” which refers to those born from 1928 to 1945 is non-white.
  • The median age for getting married, according to 2014 statistics, is the highest in the US history with the median age being 29 for men and 27 for women.
