Tinting eyebrows at home can be easy and safe as long as all instructions are followed and the appropriate precautions taken. One of the most important tips is to only use a dye kit specifically designed for tinting eyebrows. Most kits come equipped with directions and the necessary application tools, which should all be utilized exactly as described. Taking steps to protect the skin and eyes from coming into contact with the dye is also essential.

Anyone trying to tint his or her eyebrows at home should begin by selecting an eyebrow tinting kit at a beauty supply or drug store. It is important to remember that eyebrows will often look unnatural if they are tinted the exact same shade as a person's hair color. Most people have eyebrows that are a shade or two darker than their natural hair color, and as convenient as it might seem to try to tint both hair and eyebrows with dye from an at home color kit, the results will most likely be too well matched to look natural. Sticking with a kit specifically meant for tinting eyebrows is the safest bet.

Another reason to not use hair dye for tinting eyebrows is that it might be too harsh for use near sensitive facial skin and the eyes. Even though eyebrow tinting kits are generally more suitable, they might still cause irritation or allergic reactions in some people. Before tinting eyebrows, it is a good idea to test a small dab of the dye on a hidden patch of skin to make sure that no adverse reaction occurs. A sensitive area will give the best indication, so the inside of the arm is a good place to test out the tinting paste.

There are also protective measures that can be taken during the process of tinting eyebrows. Before applying the tinting formula, it is wise to spread petroleum jelly on the skin around each eyebrow to ensure that any errant dye does not stain or irritate the skin. This can be done with a finger or a clean artist or makeup brush. Gloves should be worn during the tinting process both for sanitary reasons and to keep dye from coming in contact with skin on the hands. It is also advisable to keep a gentle saline eye rinse nearby in case any of the tint accidentally comes into contact with the eyes.

When tinting eyebrows, it is absolutely essential to follow all of the instructions provided in the kit. The dye and the color activator should be mixed exactly as described, the provided applicators should be used in the appropriate manner, and the tint should not be left on any longer than indicated. Failure to follow the instructions could result in injury, irritation, or less than desirable eyebrow tinting results. For example, leaving the dye on too long could result in overly dark brows that look unnatural or garish with the person's hair color or skin tone.

@fBoyle-- Yes, there are eyebrow tints and other cosmetic products on the market that you can use to tint your eyebrows. But most people use these to color their eyebrows in matching shades to make them look fuller or more defined. If you are wanting to change the color of your eyebrows completely, you might have more luck with an eyebrow tinting kit or lightening kit.

I understand that you are not fond of dyes. So you could try eyebrow mascara which is basically a tinted gel product that comes with a mascara type wand. Or you can try an eyebrow kit that includes wax and powder. Or you could go the traditional way and try to color your brows with an eyebrow pencil.

If you are looking for more permanent solutions, then there are also eyebrow tattoos and semi-permanent tattoos which use henna.

I don't apply petroleum jelly around my eyebrows before tinting them although that's a very good tip. I simply keep some clean cotton swabs on had and wipe any excess dye around my brows as I apply the die. I do this very quickly so the dye doesn't have time to irritate my skin. I suppose it would just be easier to apply petroleum jelly though and I'll be sure to try that next time.

Is it possible to tint eyebrows without using dye? For example, can I use cosmetic products to tint them? I'm not too keen about using dyes full of chemicals so close to my eyes.
