Losing weight with Ayurveda helps to promote a healthy body, which in turn can help to keep the weight off in the long run. The remedies that are used in Ayurvedic weight loss include exercise, cleansing, massages, Ayurvedic foods and teas as well as Ayurvedic supplements. The goal is to purge the body of toxins and buildup while restoring proper nutrients to the body. There are three Doshas known as Vata, Pitta and Kapha; and Ayurveda believes that no singular solution is suitable to meet the needs for all three of them. As a result, various Ayurvedic weight loss remedies are used to compliment one or more of the Doshas to help restore a balance.

Colon cleansing is a good way to begin the weight loss process, because it enables the body to eliminate waste material more efficiently. One remedy that can help clean the colon is small and equal amounts of juice from bitter gourd, aloe vera and lemon. Honey can be added to the juices to help reduce the bitterness. Another popular remedy is drinking a glass of warm water with lemon and honey first thing in the morning or on an empty stomach during the day.

An Ayurvedic cleanse helps eliminate buildup along the intestinal walls, which essentially can slow down digestion and contributes to food cravings, fatigue and weight gain. Prior to the cleanse, all unnatural foods are eliminated from the diet in order to prepare the body and mind for the upcoming cleansing process. The cleanse itself lasts for only a few days, but it purges the body of toxins and excess fat cells, because no solid foods are introduced into the body during this time. The only forms of nourishment allowed are herbal drinks and nutritional supplements. After the cleanse, whole grains and vegetables are reintroduced into the diet.

Following an Ayurvedic diet is another effective Ayurvedic weight loss remedy. Different foods are recommended for each Dosha, but in general, bitter, spicy and astringent foods such as ginger root, cayenne pepper, black pepper, turmeric and cumin are recommended. Other foods that can be included are papaya, mangoes, pineapple and leafy green vegetables. In addition to an Ayurvedic diet, specially formulated Ayurvedic supplements and teas can help to improve digestion, remove toxins and increase energy levels.

Exercises that are suitable for each Dosha are also very important in Ayurvedic weight loss. People who have a Vata Dosha are advised to stick with gentle exercises such as deep breathing, yoga and tai chi. Pita Doshas can engage in more challenging exercises, and Kapha Doshas can engage in the most vigorous exercises, such as running, hiking and swimming. Full-body massages also have been proven to be an effective Ayurvedic weight loss remedy, because they can help eliminate toxins and improve blood circulation.
