One of the most common methods of cleansing the digestive system is fasting for several hours or a few days. Some substances, such as activated charcoal, can also be ingested to absorb toxins and other harmful substances in the digestive tract. Enemas and colon hydrotherapy procedures are also very effective for cleansing the lower part of the digestive tract. One of the most effective ways of keeping the digestive tract clean and in proper working order, however, is eating a healthy balanced diet that includes plenty of fiber.
Eliminating solid foods from the diet, or fasting, is often one of the preferred methods for cleansing the digestive system. The absence of solid waste in the digestive tract supposedly allows the body to flush out any toxins that have accumulated there. Fasting for long periods of time is usually not recommended, though, and most people generally fast for no more than 12 to 24 hours. Attempting to fast for longer than a few days can be dangerous.
When fasting, a person is usually advised to stay hydrated by drinking water. A fruit juice fast can also be used for cleansing the digestive system, though. During this type of fast, a person usually only drinks water and fruit juices.
Activated charcoal and bentonite clay tablets can also be used for cleansing the digestive system. When swallowed, these compounds can absorb toxins, such as heavy metals and pesticides, and dangerous micro-organisms that are present in the digestive tract. These are then passed out of the body in excrement. Both of these compounds can cause some side effects, however, including constipation.
Enemas and colon hydrotherapy procedures are other methods of cleansing the digestive tract. These methods are usually only used to cleanse the lower part of the digestive tract, though. An enema generally involves squeezing warm water into the rectum. Doing so helps flush toxins and hardened feces out of the body.
Colon hydrotherapy is sometimes referred to as colon irrigation. This procedure generally involves placing a sterile hose into the rectum and flushing the lower intestine with warm water. Unlike an enema, which only cleanses the lower part of the lower intestine, colon hydrotherapy typically cleanses the entire lower intestine.
The most effective method of cleansing the digestive system and preventing the build up of toxins, however, involves eating a healthy balanced diet. Fatty foods and refined sugars should not be eaten, or at least eaten in moderation. A person should also be sure to get an adequate amount of fiber, which is necessary for a healthy digestive system and regular bowel movements. Natural sources of fiber include vegetables, fruits, and whole grains.
