In my opinion, Blue Bunny sugar-free ice cream is the way to go. They have an entire line of sugar-free or low sugar flavors, not just the standard chocolate or vanilla. I was disappointed at first when I started comparing sugar-free ice cream brands, because they seemed to have a distinctly artificial sweetener aftertaste and a texture more like ice milk.

I also like Breyers sugar-free ice cream if the store doesn't carry the Blue Bunny "Sweet Freedom" line. I'll buy some sugar-free toppings and make sundaes for the family.

Since my wife and I are both diabetic, I've had to shop around for sugar-free ice creams for years. One of our favorites are sugar-free Eskimo Pies. The chocolate shell contains sugar alcohols, which don't stay in the digestive system long enough to affect blood sugar levels. The vanilla ice cream inside doesn't taste sugar-free at all. If we're in the mood for sugar-free ice cream bars, we keep at least one six-pack of these Eskimo Pies in the freezer.
