The mussel extract that is generally used to create dietary supplements comes from a type of mussel known as the perna canaliculus mussel, also called the green-lipped mussel. This type of mussel, found in New Zealand, produces an extract that is most commonly lauded for its anti-inflammatory properties. It has been used successfully to relieve the symptoms of various inflammatory diseases. Another potential benefit of the extract includes the treatment and possible prevention of heart disease. Some studies suggest that it might have antiaging benefits and might also help individuals fight off infections and heal faster.

Green-lipped mussels contain a potent omega-3 fatty acid called eicosatetraenoic acid (ETA). This particular omega-3 acid has highly effective anti-inflammatory properties. Consequently, the extract from the green-lipped mussel has been successfully used to treat painful inflammatory conditions, such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and bursitis. The extract has also been effective in relieving the symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis and Lyme disease.

The omega-3 acid within the extract, because of its heart-healthy benefits, might also be helpful in preventing or treating heart disease. Studies have shown that individuals who've take green-lipped mussel extract on a regular basis have a decreased incidence of heart disease. The occurrence of heart disease decreases even further if an individual also follows a healthy diet and exercise program.

Certain types of complex carbohydrates called glycosaminoglycans (otherwise known as mucopolysaccharides) are also present in green-lipped mussel extract. The glycosaminoglycans and, in particular, chondroitin and glucosamin have been shown to help the body repair injured or deteriorating joints. The extract has consequently been used to help patients suffering from joint injuries and has been shown to relieve the pain caused by degeneration within the joints.

If the mussel extract is harvested and prepared in a way that preserves most of the naturally occurring nutrients, some studies suggest that it might have antiaging benefits. Such benefits include stronger bones and teeth, a robust immune system, and increased nerve cell functioning. This is due primarily to the fact that the mucopolysaccharides found within the extract play a role in regulating a person’s metabolism and growth. The omega -3 acids found in the extract also promote healthy hair, skin, and nails, possibly giving a person a younger appearance.

Those individuals who have any type of allergy to seafood or iodine should not take the extract because of the high risk of a dangerous allergic reaction. Otherwise, there are no indications that the extract has any hazardous or serious side effects. Some individuals might experience gastrointestinal discomfort, such as excessive gas or diarrhea after consuming mussel extract. Consuming the extract with food has been found to reduce any such unpleasant side effects in most individuals.

Though I've always been big on seafood, I will admit that I have always been a bit hesitant to try out shellfish. For the most part, it's not always safe to eat, and even if you cook it properly, it could become contaminated if it comes in contact with the other raw shellfish. However, this article is definitely giving me second thoughts. If these are the kinds of health benefits that mussels provide, let alone the extract, then I'm definitely willing to give it a try.

While I have heard that many kinds of extracts have some great benefits, I have never heard of it being on this level. This is especially the case in the second to last paragraph, where it's mentioned that the mussel extract (if prepared properly) may even have some anti aging benefits.

I find this to be truly amazing, as it truly shows the kinds of health properties that foods can have if you take the time to prepare them right. On another note, as Euroxati stated, the reason why extracts are so powerful is because when you consume them, you're getting the entire source.

However, I do like how the article mentions that the mussel extract (and any one for that matter) should be prepared and harvested in a way, in which all the natural ingredients aren't lost. Unfortunately, I have found this to be the case for a lot of extracts that have been said to have healing properties. Many artificial ingredients and preservatives are added in, as a means to make it last longer. The downside is that it loses its "kick", and isn't as effective as some other brands. Before buying any kind of extract at a store, it's always a good idea to check the ingredients.

To be perfectly honest, I'm not surprised that mussel extract is so healthy. The reason why is because no matter what kind of food you're trying to get health benefits from, when you get the extract, that basically means that you're getting the healthiest parts of the food, and the main source of it, generally speaking. I have never thought about investing into mussel extract, but after reading this article, I am starting to have second thoughts.

Generally speaking, I don't have much omega-3 in my diets, and I think this would be a good place to start. However, due to the fact that I'm not big on drinking extract, I wonder if it would help a lot better if I were to eat it in a pill. Basically, when someone consumes an extract in the form of a pill, they're getting all the health benefits without having to worry about the bad taste, among other things as well.
