A layette set is a wardrobe of baby clothing and bedding for a newborn. The word layette is of French origin and means "small box." Layette items can be anything needed for a new baby such as diapers, but the term layette set often means a gift set, or gift box of baby things.

Clothing in layette sets is usually sized at newborn to three months, with some items made for newborn to six months. A basic bought layette set is likely to have a few sleepers or one piece body suits, pants and tops, booties and a hat. A small toy and/or a blanket may also be included. Deluxe layette sets typically have extra pants and tops, socks, bibs, several toys and other items that may include wash cloths and a comb and brush set.

Of course, a layette set makes the perfect baby shower gift. It's also an ideal gift from the giver's perspective as there is a layette set available today to suit every budget. Even the smallest layette sets are usually packaged in an appealing way in an attractive box with a ribbon or other detail. Many of the deluxe sets include sturdy decorative boxes that are meant to be kept as storage containers in the baby's room.

A layette set may also be handmade. Traditional knitted or crocheted layette sets usually include a blanket, jacket, booties and hat. They are usually in white or pastel colors and often feature ribbon trims that are used to fasten the garments as well. Modern knitted and crocheted versions of layette sets are often in multiple vivid colors with simple lines and a lack of fussy details.

Layette sets sold in stores usually feature cotton clothing and bedding in a main color with coordinating printed pieces. Some gift sets are labeled as Baby Boy and have blue prints and solids and others in pink tones read Baby Girl. Of course, there are many layette sets for sale in green, yellow and other colors as well.
