A wall mounted chin-up bar, which is also sometimes referred to as a pull-up bar, is a rather simple piece of workout equipment. As the name indicates, this piece of equipment is mounted onto a wall and is used for arm-strengthening exercises such as chin-ups and pull-ups. These exercises are completed by lifting oneself up off the ground while firmly grasping the bar and bringing the chin up to the level of the bar.
Chin-up and pull-ups are exercises that are performed while standing. For this reason, a wall mounted chin-up bar should be placed high on a wall, usually six feet (about 1.8 meters) or more about the floor. In a public gym, a wall mounted chin-up bar must be placed at a height that will serve the members based on their average height. When they are installed in a home for personal use, they can be placed at the ideal height for the individual user.
Before installing a wall mounted chin-up bar, it is important to make sure that the wall is strong enough to hold the equipment and that it will be able to withstand the stress that will be applied while the bar is in use. Both the weight of the equipment and the average weight of the user or users should be taken into account. Many of these types of bars come with specific instructions. It is advisable, whenever possible, to have such equipment installed by a professional.
Chin-up bars come in a number of designs. The wall-mounted versions usually have a few key features in common. There is one straight bar that is designed so that it can be installed directly against the wall. From this bar extends another two much shorter bars that are usually spaced to be shoulder-width apart for an average adult male. These are the bars that are gripped during the exercise.
The alterations and distinctions in designs for this kind of exercise equipment usually have to do with the handles and grips. Some of the handles are simply two straight rods that extend directly out from the wall. Others have rounded handles with padded or rubber grips. They are usually black in color but can be found in a few other select tones. For those who intend to use a wall mounted chin-up bar on a very regular basis, a model with padded grips may be helpful to protect the skin on the hands from blistering.
