As well as improving one's mental and emotional frame of mind, some experts believe that deep meditation has medical benefits as well. Reducing high blood pressure in some patients may be one of the advantages of meditation, although this is speculative.

Although deep meditation is not meant to replace conventional means of medical treatment, it can promote a healthy state of relaxation. There are various ways of practicing deep meditation. Some individuals prefer to use enhancements and aids while doing meditation, such as incense, candles, and essential oils. An ambient noise generator, such as a sound machine, may also be used during meditation. Noise generators may simulate the sound of a waterfall or thunderstorm to enhance concentration and block out other disturbing sounds in the environment.

When performing deep meditation, a practitioner is encouraged to voluntarily force the mind to shut down, while still maintaining a sense of awareness. By shutting down the thinking process, preoccupation or distraction is not an issue. The overactive mind becomes calmed while the person maintains his cognizance.

After all conscious thoughts are erased, the individual may recite a mantra. A mantra is a type of chant, typically in the form of a word or phrase that may be repeated several times in succession. Many people who practice this deep form of meditation consider a mantra a form of prayer that helps concentration.
