Myopathic muscular therapy is a type of therapeutic massage. It is used to provide pain relief and improve restricted body movement. To accomplish these things, myopathic muscular therapy attempts to restore the blood supply to its normal level while also helping to provide good nervous system function. It is described as a total-body treatment. Instead of focusing just on the parts of the body that are experiencing pain, it is intended to handle the body as a whole.

The first treatment of myopathic muscular therapy is actually performed over three different appointments. The practitioner uses these initial sessions to not only perform the procedure, but also to evaluate how effective it is for the receiver's body. In performing this technique, the practitioner manipulates the body and applies pressure manually. Both the force applied and resistance are slowly increased, gradually encouraging the body to respond to treatment. Following the initial sessions, the practitioner determines how many additional sessions are necessary to provide the best possible results.

At the root of myopathic muscular therapy is the Osteopathic Principle. According to this principle, when a person's body is in optimum condition, her bodily processes will also be optimal. It is also noted that the muscles are the only body tissues that can become tense. When muscle tension rises to above-normal levels, it impairs the normal blood supply and nervous system function, causing both inflammation and pain. To alleviate these problems, myopathic muscular therapy uses the practitioner's hands, fingers, and elbows to relax tight muscles.

There is a full range of conditions that may respond to myopathic muscular therapy. They include pain caused by chronic problems, such as whiplash, fibromyalgia, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, carpal tunnel syndrome, and other injuries and conditions that affect the soft tissue; it is also said to provide relief for headache pain. It may even be a helpful technique for those who play sports or are involved in strenuous physical activity. Additionally, it may be helpful for treating muscle pain that has progressively developed over years as well as strain that can accompany advancing age and declining health. It is also used for relieving pain caused by infections.

WiseGEEK is dedicated to providing accurate and trustworthy information. We carefully select reputable sources and employ a rigorous fact-checking process to maintain the highest standards. To learn more about our commitment to accuracy, read our editorial process.
