What Is Synthetic Grass?

Synthetic grass is an artificial surface designed to resemble natural grass. Although it is meant to have a natural appearance, it is manufactured using solely synthetic materials. It also tends to be harder than natural grass.

Traditionally, synthetic grass has been used in sports arenas where natural grass is difficult to maintain, particularly indoor arenas. The first wide-known use of it was to cover the ground of the Astrodome in Houston, Texas, in 1965, and this is where the name AstroTurf® originated. Fake grass has, however, increasingly become more popular for use in private lawns as well.

In the 1970s, AstroTurf® and other synthetic grass composites exploded onto the scene for both indoor and outdoor stadiums. Despite its convenience, players and spectators still often preferred natural grass. This is largely because the original synthetic materials did not respond in the same way as natural grass, and because its relative stiffness caused more injuries to occur.

Today, advances in the development of synthetic grass have made it a more desirable alternative. Infusing the synthetics with materials such as sand and rubber has helped the grass gain a more natural appearance and has also made it safer for sports. In fact, it's now considered to be a safer alternative to natural grass when playing in cold weather.

Many sports arenas ultimately decided to remove their synthetic grass after the poor response from fans and players. With improved formulas, however, many of those that originally removed it are using it once again. Similarly, those arenas that stuck with AstroTurf® are replacing it with the new and improved modern materials.

The improvement in the look and feel of synthetic grass has contributed largely to its increased use for residential lawns. By using it, homeowners can enjoy the look of a healthy, green, perfectly maintained lawn throughout the entire year. In addition, fake grass requires minimal maintenance, making it far more convenient and less costly to maintain than natural grass.

Today, synthetic grass has even found its way into residential settings, with homeowners opting to install home putting greens made from this artificial surface. With advances in technology, modern synthetic grass closely resembles natural grass, offering a lush, green appearance year-round. Its durability and low maintenance make it an attractive choice for those seeking a perfectly manicured lawn without the hassle of constant upkeep.

I am a mom of two kids. I installed artificial turf for their garden playground. I filled my backyard with artificial grass from an online site. It is safer compared to natural lawns because it has softer edges and helps avoid abrasions and knee injuries.

I was so fooled by a great looking lawn in my neighborhood that it took me a while to realize it was synthetic. The lawn was perfect, but the color was so green that it just caught my eyes. I can see so many advantages to a synthetic lawn, but they are some disadvantages too, such as they are more expensive to install. I have read that to maintain it you just need to use air blower.

I have a 4 year old 2,000 sq. feet synthetic lawn. It looked fantastic when we first had it installed and now it lays flat. I think they call this "matting".

A power broom fluffs up the grass for only a couple of days.

Are there any new grasses that resist matting? Are there any in development?

please let me know if there are now better alternatives!
