Toupee tape is a form of adhesive used for securing a toupee or hairpiece to the scalp while worn. A toupee is a custom hairpiece, generally worn by men, and is made for people who need or desire to wear a hairpiece only periodically or temporarily. Thus, toupee tape is a form of temporary adhesive made for hairpieces as opposed to permanent hair bonding or replacement.
Much like adhesive bandages, toupee tape is available in a wide variety of sizes and shapes. Toupee tape is double sided and many pieces are simply straight, precut strips. Toupee tape is also available in rolls to cut to any desired length. Other shapes include curved and angled pieces for applying around the ears, the nape of the neck, and the front of the scalp. Most people apply toupee tape to the perimeter of their hairpiece as well as the center and find that certain shapes work better than others depending on the shape of their head and the hairpiece.
There are a number of toupee tape manufacturers and often times the retailer where a wig or toupee is purchased will recommend adhesive. Be sure to get a durable adhesive that will last for the duration of wear to avoid awkward situations and promote confidence that your hairpiece will stay in place. If you have particularly sensitive skin, it may be best to test a small bit of adhesive on your scalp before applying toupee tape to your entire scalp.
Most toupee tape adhesives are durable enough to last the day and there is generally some adhesive residue left over after removal. Adhesive removers that are specially designed to remove the residue are sold wherever toupee tape is sold and are typically gentler on the skin. However, isopropyl rubbing alcohol will also effectively remove adhesive residue as well, though it tends to be drying to the skin.
Wig and toupee retailers will also help fit you for your hairpiece and demonstrate the proper application of adhesives. They may also present alternative forms of adhesive to help you discover what works best for you.
