What Percent of the World's Hazelnuts Is Used by Nutella?

Twenty-five percent of the world's hazelnuts are used by Nutella, a hazelnut cocoa spread made by the Italian manufacturer Ferrero Group. The product is the largest consumer of hazelnuts worldwide. To keep a steady supply of hazelnuts for Nutella, the Ferrero Group owns its own hazelnut manufacturer in Turkey, the area that grows the majority of the world’s hazelnut supply. Each standard 13 ounce jar of Nutella is said to contain approximately 50 hazelnuts. In 2013, there were approximately $2.46 billion US Dollars (USD) worth of Nutella sales worldwide, and it is estimated that around one jar of the spread is sold every 2.5 seconds.

More about Nutella:

  • Nutella was originally created in Italy in the 1940s as a way of stretching out a limited chocolate supply from World War II rationing.
  • Although Nutella is known as a spread, it has also been sold in a loaf so that it could be sliced to fit precisely on a piece of bread.
  • The Earth could be circled approximately 1.4 times with the jars of Nutella made in one year, according to 2013 figures.
