What’s It like to Live on a Private Island?

It might be that no man is an island, but that certainly hasn't stopped people from buying their own piece of paradise. Take Guy Laliberté, the co-founder of Cirque du Soleil. Since 2007, he has owned Nukutepipi, a pristine, sandy atoll in French Polynesia with all kinds of plant and animal life. And now, it has human life as well -- at least sometimes. Nukutepipi can be rented on an exclusive basis by up to 52 people for approximately $1.1 million USD per week. It's even listed on Airbnb Luxe, the home rental company's new venture for luxury getaways. For those lucky enough to get an invite, Nukutepipi offers kitesurfing, sailing, canoeing, tennis, archery, stargazing at the observatory, and much more. When they're worn out, guests can choose from 16 bungalows and villas right on the beach and dine on gourmet meals, with around 100 staff members available to cater to their every need.

What to do with all of that money:

  • Other celebrities who own islands include David Copperfield, Tyler Perry, Pamela Anderson, and Nicolas Cage.
  • Hundreds of people have bought tickets on Virgin Galactic's planned flights into space for $250,000 USD, though none have flown yet.
  • In 2002, a Hong Kong jeweler reportedly spent $38 million USD on a 24-carat gold toilet as part of a shrine to Russian leader Vladimir Lenin.
