California has more marriages each year than any other state in the US, according to data from 2009. Measured in absolute numbers (i.e., not relative to total population), California and Texas have the most marriages, likely due to their large populations. Florida comes in third and New York, despite its relatively small geographical size, is the fourth most popular state for marriages. Nevada is the fifth most popular, likely due to its fairly relaxed laws regarding marriage requirements, and the fact that weddings in Las Vegas have been romanticized in numerous movies and television shows.
