Which US State Has the Fewest Passports?

In the United States, the state with the fewest passports is believed to be Wyoming, which is the state with the lowest population. The state with the lowest percentage of citizens holding a passport, however, is believed to be Mississippi, where it is estimated that less than one-fifth of the population has a passport. Other states with low rates of passport holders include Louisiana, Arkansas, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky and West Virginia, all of which are estimated to have less than 30 percent of the population holding passports.

More facts about passports:

  • The state with the highest percentage of passport holders is New Jersey, where almost 70 percent of the population is believed to have a passport. Alaska and Delaware are other states with a high percentage of passport holders, followed by Massachusetts, New York and California. These are the only six states in which more than 60 percent of the population is believed to have a passport.

  • More than 12 million passports are issued to U.S. residents every year.

  • The maximum number of pages that a U.S. passport can have is 96 — after that, you have to get a new passport.
